International Day - Thursday, 30th May
International Day is only a week away and we are all looking forward to what is sure to be an incredible event.
There are 39 countries being represented on the day, either by parent volunteers or within classrooms!
You are all invited to come along on Thursday, 30th May, between 8:30am and 11:00am, to take your child on a trip 'around the world'. Every child will be issued with their own Passport which they will use to collect stamps from the different countries they visit. If you are unable to come into school, then your child will be taken 'around the world' by one of our specialist teachers so they won't miss out on the fun!
To make the day extra colourful, we would like all the children to come dressed in their national dress or the colours of their flag.
As there are activities planned throughout the day, parents are reminded that all children need to return to their classes after they have visited the different countries. This also means that there will be no assemblies next Thursday for Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1. These will resume on Thursday, 13th June.

Meet our New Head of Foundation
We are delighted to announce that Miss Victoria Hamilton has been appointed as the New Head of Foundation, from May 2013. Victoria joined Star Mirdif in January as a Year 1 teacher, having taught in Foundation Stage and Year 1 for 6 years in the UK. In the short time she has been at Star, her experience, enthusiasm and dedication have shone through and we look forward to the developments she will bring to the Foundation Stage department. If you have not yet met Miss Hamilton then she will be around to chat to parents after the Foundation Stage assembly on Thursdays.

Healthy Eating
Please can I remind you about the importance of providing a healthy packed lunch which your child is happy to eat.
On Thursdays, children can have a small treat, such as a chocolate bar, small cake or packet of crisps. However, we would ask that this is kept in moderation and accompanied by healthy foods.

International Day - 30th May 2013
This week our School Councillors met with Dr Khalanthar, our Director of Education, to present their ideas for Enterprise Week. He was very impressed with our young entrepreneurs and has generously agreed to loan each class 100Dhs to cover their initial set up costs.
During our Enterprise Week, these plans will be put into action when each year group makes a different item to sell to the rest of the school.

International Day - 30th May 2013
Our much anticipated 'International Day' will be held on May 30th 2013. This event is a chance for us all to learn lots of exciting and interesting things about different countries around the world and to share a little of our own cultural backgrounds with other members of the school community.
This year we have children from 51 different countries and we would very much like every child to have their country represented at International Day. This is where we need your help!
Each country will be asked to set up a table or stall to give a glimpse into the culture, customs, cuisine, music and significant features of their home country. In the past, the stalls have included objects and posters for the children to look at, cooking demonstrations, food tastings, traditional music and costumes and much, much more. The children love visiting all the different stalls and those that offer an activity for the children to participate in are especially popular.
You are all invited to come along, between 8:30am and 11:00am, to take your child on a trip 'around the world'. They will be issued with their own International Passport which they will use to collect stamps from the different countries they visit. To make the day extra colourful, we would like all the children to come dressed in their national dress or the colours of their flag.
International Day really is a wonderfully rewarding experience and we very much hope you will consider being a volunteer. If you are unsure, don't know where to begin or have never participated in this type of event before, please contact Tina Skerritt (administrator.mirdif@starintlschools.com) or Lesley Graham (lesleygraham@starintlschools.com) and they will be happy to answer any questions.
Please take a few minutes to complete the attached form to express your interest in being a volunteer.

Parent Volunteers Reading Support
Reading support will be starting from Sunday, 28th April.
Thank you to all those parents who have volunteered to help support our children in learning to read English and Arabic.
We will be holding a 30 minute workshop on Monday 22nd April at 12.30pm in the Phoenix meeting room, to provide these parents with more guidance on hearing children read in school.
It's not too late to volunteer!
We would like as many parents as possible to come in on a regular basis to support children with their reading.
If you are able to give up a little of your time, please let your child's teacher know on Sunday and join us for the workshop on 22nd April.

We are so close to meeting our target - only another 520Dhs to raise to meet the target. The total raised so far is 19,480Dhs.
