PTFA

Please find below the first edition of the PTFA 2012/2013 Newsletter.

The next big event for the PTFA is the organisation of the National Day Celebrations on 29th November.

If you have any toys, books, uniform etc that you would like to donate for the bric-a-brac / second hand uniform stall, please hand these items in to either the Pegasus or Phoenix Receptions by November 22nd 2012.

Come along to our next meeting which will be held in the Pegasus Staffroom at 8.10am on Tuesday, 20th November when we will be finalising arrangements for the National Day celebrations.

Staff News

A very warm welcome is extended to 'old' staff as they return from their holidays and to new staff arriving in Dubai to take up their posts at SIS Mirdif. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful year ahead.

Admission

The first step to admitting or registering a student for September 2012 is for the parents to visit the school and meet the administration team, who will then conduct the family through the process. Below is a step-by-step guide through this journey!

  1. Visit the school in Mirdif (see Contact -> Location)
  2. Meet the administration team and find out information about the school
  3. Make an appointment for interview and assessment test
  4. Collect the Application Form and complete it at home (see end for required documents)
  5. Return on the appointed date for the assessment test and interview with form and documents
  6. If the interview and test are successful and all documents in order, pay:
  7. Registration Fee (non-refundable) AED 500
  8. Once you have paid, your child is registered with Star International School Mirdif!

Required Documents:

  1. 2 Copies of child's passport (including visa/entry page)
  2. 2 Copies of parent's passport (including visa/entry page)
  3. 6 Recent photographs (photographic paper!) of your child
  4. 1 Copy of all previous school reports, if applicable (mandatory for Y1 and above)
  5. 2 Copies of child's birth certificate (attested)
  6. Complete Immunization and Vaccination records
  7. Transfer Certificate (TC) (Extremely important for Y1 and above)
    1. The Ministry will not register your child without this certificate
    2. The Transfer Certificate (TC) must be on an official school letterhead with:
      1. Full name of child
      2. Date of birth of child
      3. Date of enrolment
      4. Date of leaving
      5. Grade/Level upon leaving
      6. School Curriculum
      7. School stamp with principal's signature
      8. Attestation by Ministry of Education (in country of TC)
      9. Attestation by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in country of TC)
      10. Attestation by UAE Embassy (in country of TC)

Criteria

Each child will have a pre-admission meeting with an appointed staff member to assess the suitability of the school to the child and the readiness of the child to join our school. The parents will discuss family circumstances in regard to potential school admission, which may for example include subjects like previous education history, learning readiness, personal hygiene and social behaviour. During the discussion, the child is assessed in an age appropriate way and standardised tests are used in the majority of cases for admission to FS2 and the years beyond. In most cases, previous school records will be reviewed as well and, in some instances, the previous school may be contacted for clarification. While many parents often feel that the match between school (or a certain class) and the child is unambiguous, it is still entirely at Star International School's discretion that a child is admitted. Below is a table outlining the statutory age limits (according to the KHDA) for each academic level:

FS1: Age 3on Sep 15
FS2: Age 4on Sep 15
Y1: Age 5on Sep 15
Y2: Age 6on Sep 15
Y3: Age 7on Sep 15
Y4: Age 8on Sep 15
Y5: Age 9on Sep 15
Y6: Age 10on Sep 15
